Big Year 2026: April Update
April month has been chaos! Work, refereeing and trips in between!
Firstly I am sorry this is late, for some reason I the blog didn’t save which of course then it mean that it didn’t go live! This month as been a slow month for the list! However, things are slowing down and I am going to play catch up on time that I may have missed for whatever reason!
Sunny days again!
The weather this month has been good! The standard visit to Slimbridge and keeping things local in local reserves. I think the key thing to remember this month is that wildlife is everywhere, you don’t have to travel to places far away, nature is always around you!
The Highlights
Now the highlights for this month is right back to the start of the month. Whilst working away I happened to bump into a gentleman who owned the land around the hotel and he gave me permission to walk around it and take some pictures. Whilst on this walk, I was able to bump into a lot of already seen speices like Buzzards, Red Kites, Gold Crests however, the stand out birds was a flock of Yellow Hammers! I have seen this in a previous year, but not this year! I was over the moon to be able to see them!
But, if I was pick out some non bird wildlife, then it would have to this photo of a Hare! It was great to be within meters of this!
Now back to the birds! I love this time of year, adult birds rushing around to feed their young! Whilst as Slimbridge I saw my first baby birds just sitting in the sun enjoying the the early morning rays! They were just too cute not to take a photo! There were 6 little Pink Footed Goslings!
May plans
As I rewriting this today and posting on the same day, I am excited about a lot of adventures to be happening this month! With one happening tomorrow! I am hoping to get out and about a bit more! There will also be a few posts on social media of peregrines at Tewkesbury too! I may do a special post for them this month too!
Some of the new species added to the list are:
Yellow Hammer
Black Cap
Swallow
Swift
Skylark
Green Wood Pecker
Bar Tailed Godwit
Big Year Progress
As I said before, my goal for this big year is simple: record every new species I spot. If you’d like me to include monthly stats or breakdowns, let me know in the comments and I’ll start adding them.
Well April was a month of crazy so not many new birds to be added to the list!
Still, I’m thrilled to say that for March, I recorded 7 new bird species! This brings my total number of different species to 101!
If you’re following along with your own list, how many did you spot this month?
